On Saturday when we were shopping I noticed $.75 off peelies on the Hidden Valley bags of salad helpers. Below the bags was a tear pad for $1.00 off any produce when you bought the Salad Helper bag. Cool, saving $1.75 on stuff I was already buying.
There was a lady who grabbed a bag in front of me and tossed it in her cart. I noticed she had a bunch of produce so I caught her attention and handed her one of the $1 off coupons.
This is how the conversation went:
“Ma’am, here is another $1 off because you bought that bag.”
She says, ” Oh no thanks I’ll just loose it”
“It’s for today, just hand it over at the register, along with that peelie on the bag and you can save $1.75.” I say.
“Oh, thats O.K. you keep it ( as if I was selling her something!) I am not into that.” She declares.
Huh? I wonder if $1.75 was laying on the ground if she was going to just walk over it and not pick it up, because that is basically what she did! Funny.
**Deal Idea**
Buy romain lettuce $1.69
Buy Hidden Valley Salad Bag $2.50
Use $.75 peelie on HIdden Valley
Use $1.00 tear pad for produce WYB HIdden Valley
Total: $2.44
There is a $1.00 off coupon for the kits on coupons.com also. I used the deal on Saturday.
I think of coupons as the same way.
Unfortunately, all the coupons I get from grocery stores always apply to everything we DON’T buy. Can’t use coupons for what we don’t buy *sigh*
Months ago I tried to use a coupon combination like this, where you use the 1.00 off coupon on an item and also use a coupon that says you get a 1.00 off something else for buying that item. They said that walmart does not do this because I would be using 2 coupons on that 1st item… anyone else run into this? Do the coupons beep, she wouldn’t even try to scan it for me… Also they would not allow a B1G1 coupon along with a 1.00/1 coupon for two items.
I do not think mine beeped, if they had it is usually a big deal and I dont remember anything not going through on the first try.
Jen, I tried these exact scenarios at my Walmart and they wouldn’t except the coupons. Same reason – using two coupons for the first item.
It amazes me that large store chains do not know how to use coupons. I can go into a CVS or Kroger and have no problems. I think they need to get more customer friendly and truly TRAIN their employees on coupons.
It is not just the big stores. I ran into this at Fareway a couple of weeks ago. I used a coupon for a box of crackers. The crackers had a coupon on it for a $1.00 off tuna. The second coupon beeped saying the item was not there so they would not take the second coupon. I would have argued as one was for the crackers and one was for the tuna but I had a long line behind me so I just lost the 50 cents.
Its sad that in this economic market there is still people that are so blind to saving a $1.75.
I totally agree~ People just don’t seem to get it know matter how many times you try and help them~ They act as if they wouldn’t pick that $ amount up as Paul said if it were on the floor!!! Makes me sooo mad! Come on people why pay more if you don’t have too?
Sorry guys I meant NO matter instead of know~LOL 🙂
I have had this same reaction before. “Oh, I don’t really have time for that.” What? You don’t have time when I am handing you the equivalent of cash? That’s like saying I don’t have time to dig into my purse to find a few dollars down there. Kinda silly.
Are you kidding me? She didn’t even have to do anything to get the coupon. Wow! If she only knew how much money she could save. Crazy woman
I always hope people ask me questions about the coupons that I am using. Because I am a visual person so when I put something in my cart I put a coupon on it or beside it. So I always hope people see that I use a coupon for pretty much everything!! The cashiers at my Walmart are always enthusiastic and tell me I must save a lot of money using coupons and they hope I save a lot that trip. I haven’t done this hidden valley salad kid scenario yet but I will because I have about 5 of those tearpad coupons from my Walmart. About 1.50 for a fancy salad? I am not saying no to that.
I always see people getting this or that at the store and smile and think they could of printed a coupon for that at home and not paid full price lol. Or came over to my house and I would of printed it for them lol.
I look at it this way! If someone is going to give me $1.00 off an item for a piece of paper, I would be “nuts” not too!
I made a random act of kindness last week that I gave up a rare 1.oo of on Angelsoft bathroom tissue. I noticed this item in someone’s cart & he have a stack of Qs in his hand too so I asked if he has any for the ‘angel’ & when he said no, you know what’s next =)
Its funny you posted this becuase last night I stopped into Food Lion to get the $1 off peelies for the Classico pasta sauce that was on sale at Harris Teeter so I notice a lady pricing the pasta sauce and decided to give her one and told her that Harris Teeter has a them on sale and you can pay $.49 a jar vs. $2.29 here. She was like thanks and I offered another coupon and she said I don’t need it? What? Well give me my coupon back if you are not going to use it! Lol I was kinda blown away that she rather pay full price! I guess she has never been broke enough!
Some ppl look at coupons has just plain paper…. I dont understand them. If some one walked up to me and said i have a coupon for something i had in my cart, I would be pleased. I have in the past given a few coupons up to ppl that were inline behind me but it was only when they asked about my coupon binder. They would be shocked that I only paid alittle for a full bag of items.
Ex: Today
2 Olay 2 ct Bars $2.48 ea
Loreal true Match Foundation $8.97
Total should have been $13.93
I did this:
Price Matched CVS Ad Loreal True Match $7.00
& used $2.00 MF Coupon
& used 2 $2.00 MF OLAY
OOP = $5.96 Now that is 57% savings
People just don’t understand that coupons are MONEY!
What I don’t get is when people shopping at WalMart are too good to use coupons. I mean, there are other places to shop at besides WalMart which is supposed to be the low price leader so of course people go there to save money on WalMart’s roll backs and all that stuff. They are too rich to save $1.75 on things they are going to buy anyway with no extra effort required on their part? I don’t know how you can not be into coupons that someone is giving you already matched up, lol. Even before I knew how much money you could save shopping with coupons if someone would’ve handed me one on something I was buying I had enough sense to say thank you and to use them!
The lady in Wal-mart, she just knew you were going to mug her as soon as she took that coupon from you, or that it was a new scam to somehow take advantage of her and she was going to get away from you as fast as possible. You do look dangerous, right?
Tried this once, got about the same reaction. So I don’t even try sharing coupons anymore.
your a good person paul. if that was me, i cant thank you enough…. well, thanks for all you do! 🙂
I too have stopped offering, but I get a kick when people in my isle ask me if I happen to have a coupon for what THEY are looking for. Sometimes I will leave a coupon on a product, one lady followed me around the whole store to see what I was buying, then looked at the coupon and bought it herself with the coupon I had left on that product. Towards the end of my shopping on my last item, I took a piece of paper and wrote.. “Thanks for following me, its been fun! Visit :iheartthemart.com , just in case we don’t meet again.! 🙂
People are funny- I’ve had that same situation happen to me too.
I love when non coupon users are behind me in checkout , hear them sigh when I hand all my coupons over then see my total when I’m done and are totally amazed and start asking questions!! : ) I’m thankful for all these GREAT sites that help me out!
