The 2012 Walmart Layaway Program for the Holiday Season has been announced and I have some really exciting news for you. I think it is awesome! There are some key changes that make it a no brainer for this Holiday Season.
I was trying to get some clarification on the Walmart Price Match Policy for the 2012 Holiday season and it looks like it will remain the same. Ads will be matched throughout the holiday season just like normal, including black friday deals(not eligible for Layaway). They will be time sensitive and items much match exactly. If there are any changes I will update you as I get it.
Here are the key changes to the policy that I think make it great:
- They have expanded the list of eligible categories: It including small home appliances and select sporting goods such as basketball goals, trampolines and large exercise equipment. Customers can also use layaway for a broad selection of electronics, toys and jewelry.
- Early layaway access for shoppers who like their local Walmart store on Facebook. Customers simply need to sign up on their local Walmart Facebook page beginning August 28 to be able to start their layaway two days early on Sept. 14. That means you will have a full 90 days for layaway this year instead of 60!
- A full refund of the layaway open fee ($5) (was $15) given on a Walmart gift card for customers who make their final payment.
Here is the what the process, fees and requirements are:
- A down payment of 10 percent or $10, whichever is greater, is required and is applied to the purchase.
- Individual items must be priced $15 or more, and the total layaway purchase must be at least $50.
- If the order is cancelled or not paid in full, the open fee is not refunded; however, no additional cancellation fee will be charged.
Breakdown:
The biggest down side that I think people will have an issue with is that they upped the open fee from $5.00 last year to $15.00. The part that is WAY better is that you get it ALL back when you make your final Layaway payment in the form of a Walmart Gift Card.
Sooo, What do you think?
Please leave comments with your feedback and share this with all your friends! The $15 Layaway Open Fee has been changed to $5.00

i quit using layaway at walmart when they started doing the new policy of each item has to be at least $15.00. Allot of things I picked out for my daughter jewerly, makeup, polish etc. wasn’t over 15.00 a item but it sure did add up at the register. It would have been nice to have been able to make payments on it.

Thanks!

Fine with me…any help buying those big ticket items such as the trampoline is GREATLY appreciated!

I don’t understand how layaway is worth it. I wouldn’t want to pay Walmart, or any other store for that matter, to hold gifts for me! Plan ahead, do some good old-fashioned saving, and then go purchase the item(s)!

I love Walmart layaway it helps out a lot with the big ticket items that you can’t afford all at once! I used it last year and loved it and I plan on using it again this year!

I had a question, is there a list any where of what kind of electronics and other stuff that can and cant be put on lay way?
Kimberly says
Ok, I work for Wal-Mart and I am a CSM so this is my area all day LOL. Anyway, from what I can tell from the meeting we just had, anything from Electronics and Toys is eligible as long as it is over $15 dollars, and not on clearance. It can be a rollback, but no clearance. Also jewelry has always had layaway, they never took it away. As far as the other departments like sporting goods or home appliances, I do believe it is for the big things like basketball goals, trampolines, and mixers and such. All store should be flagging with red flags all of the new items that are eligible for the layaway program! I can’t wait, I need it to get all my must haves this year. Also, just a big heads up, once you have established your layaway, you can go to ANY register and make a payment at ANY TIME of day or night. You don’t have to wait in the long line at the Site to store area. Just bring your layaway receipt with you please!
katie says
So could you put like an Ipad on layway? And big ticket electronics like that?
Kimberly says
As long as there is one in stock then yes. I suggest putting it on layaway ASAP because once they are gone that’s it. IPADs and gaming systems were the first thing gone last year. That and Monster High dolls for some reason LOL
Anna says
Layaway program is great. If there is a big item you want and it’s in stock now, better to have it saved. Because if you wait until November or December the item might be sold out. Something to keep in mind on hot items

I’m soo excited that we can price match Black Friday prices on layaway but my question is can we put movies, video games, and board games on layaway as well?
G. Johnson says
It says you can’t layaway blackfriday iteams up above. it said excludes blackfriday iteams for layaway. 🙁
Paul says
I know, There are many Walmart stores that are allowing it on items sold during the hours Layaway are open. That will exclude all of the biggies.
Matt says
What that should mean, is that on black friday, you can’t put something on layaway for 2 weeks or so, then still get the black friday price.
The idea here, is that you put something on layaway TODAY, and pick it up on black friday, pay it off then, and you’ll get it for the black friday price. No waiting outside and no fighting for 1 of 5 available items.
I’m going to my local wal-mart tonight to see if this is true though.
Paul says
Hey Matt, this will work on Walmart items IF your store is going to have their layaway open and B, the items you are wanting to put on layaway are not promo packaged with a different bar code. This strategy will work especially well for items you can match from other stores BFads that have the same MODEL #, the skus are all going to be different from different stores, so in this case they need to be the exact same thing.
Matt says
So for tvs, computers, or other large items, the model # will need to be identical, but the skus are going to be different no matter what, right? So when they price match from, say a Best Buy ad, they’ll go off the model #, correct?
If I recall correctly, movies and games that wal-mart has on sale for BF all have special UPC codes, but regarding price matching from other stores, even that shouldn’t matter if it’s the exact same movie/game, right?
Paul says
That is correct Matt.
Lindsay says
It appears that any item you want to put on layaway has to be a minimum of $15, so for some of the items like t-shirts or super cheap DVD’s, you may still have to peruse the racks. Someone correct me if I’m wrong! But this will be ah-maaazing for any bigger items.
tess says
i dont find this info on the walmart website? can you show me where it is? so i can print it out-if i have any problems?
thanks

I just called the layaway dept and supervisors at Walmart stores #703, 5045 and #3390. #5045 and #3390 which are the stores that have the item I want to put on layaway both said they will NOT change the price on items that were put on layaway before black friday even if I paid them off on Black Friday. #703 said they will but they dont have the item I want. So what do I do so I don’t have to stand in line all night???
Paul says
The computer automatically gives you the price that an item is on sale for THAT day.
G. Johnson says
I think it sucks Walmart will not let you put the BlackFriday iteams on layaway. Even though discounted, some are rather expensive and it would be a huge help to lower and or fixed income families (esp single mom’s doing it alone) to have those few weeks to finish rounding up a few dollars to pay it off. Not to mention not having it in the house for kids to find and go through before Christmas. This is really an insult to me personally as I’m one of those mom’s on a fixed income trying to do it on my own with no help from governement aid, family or otherwise.
