This is an excerpt from a memo that went out to Walmart Management clarifying points in the Coupon & Price Matching policies as they pertain to using coupons with BOGO ad matching.
Here is the example used:
* Ad match should be completed first
-Buy one shampoo @ $1.50 get one free is the Ad Match.(quantities limited)
-Walmart’s price is $2.50
*Price override two bottle of shampoo that are required in the BOGO ad match to $.75 each(tax)
-Review quantities on coupon/ad
*Scan the BOGO Manufacturer coupon and enter $2.50 as that is Walmart’s retail price.
-Ensure that $2.50 is written on the manufacturer coupon.
-A minimum of 3 items must be purchased(accounted for) when using this ad match/ coupon combination
So… What does this mean. Let’s break this down into what I think is the most important.
1. This should completely eliminate ALL of the “you can’t price match and use a coupon issues”. (assuming this went out to all stores)
2. You should now be able to use a BOGO Mfg coupon in addition to a price match BOGO sale.
a)You will need 3 items to do this type of transaction.
b)Your transaction will not be completely free. In example 1 you will get 3 items for $1.50
3. This memo completely spells out the cash back policy just in case their were cashiers/CSM’s or Managers that think otherwise.
4. It looks as though Walmart is going to enforce all limits on ad match deals.
The way this memo went is worded will completely confuse many people, especially cashiers and managers. I have sent an email in to corporate to clarify the total price for their example scenarios. By splitting the price match BOGO ad portion they are assiging a price to the item, therefore allowing a BOGO coupon to be used on it.
Overall, I think this is great news. No, you don’t get 2 totally free items, but it does turn it into a buy 1 get 2 free.
So, what do you think?
Just wondering if they’re going to release anything to the consumer so that we have it with us in case our local wm management claims to still not know this?
I think i will be using my bogo coupons elsewhere…my walmart gives me a headache just trying to price match let alone using a regular coupon with a price match.. I even had a manager once get into my face and scream at me over a dang coupon. I did report this to corp. and the other manager at the store and what was done…NOTHING!
I agree with you….it’s like pulling teeth to try and price match anything. I always have the ad with me and they look it over like it’s some illegal document. I love how they make it look so easy on the commercials.
I must have a great local Walmart. They ad match without a problem. I always carry the ads with me and they look at the quantity, size etc. But do not go strictly by the picture. The best deal I had was where I found body wash in ad at a local store for almost half of what Walmart charges. Then used my bogo coupons on them. I have never done bogo ad match with a bogo coupon but I have done it with other coupons and never had a problem either.
I just hope this goes out to all the stores . Last time I tried to price match on a b1g1 they told me they no longer do them at all.
This is great that they will do the BOGO ad with BOGO Coupon!!! The question I have is the BOGO with Manu coupon, can this be done? and if so where in the policy does it state so I can have on hand. Thanks
if it is an ad match bogo yes you can. if it is 2 MFG coupons then no
That clears it up 🙂 Thanks Paul!
Yes…they need to clarify if they will let you use a manu coupon for one item & then the B1G1 coupon since you made the purchase. Example: the P&G coupons usually do this with Old Spice, Gillette, etc. You usually see it with personal hygiene products & Wal-mart says it is double couponing…which it isn’t since you meet the criteria for both coupons…UGH…they are so annoying.
I know this is really frustrating. This is how Walmart interprets the use of BOGOcoupons. They say that the BOGO coupon is being applied on the item that is being paid for making the second item free. This would not allow you to use a second coupon because they don’t allow coupons on a free item.
I have a question , can i price match an ad that states 10 f0r $10, and then buy one item for $1?
from my experience (middle TN walmart) if you want to price match kroger or a store similar that has the 10/$10 sale and you MUST purchase the 10 items to get the discount then yes, you have to buy the 10.
darn i was going to buy 2, i dont want 10. my walmart (N. GA) has been good but this is my first try at price matching kroger. which is great because i dont want to drive the 30 miles to go to it. i guess it cant hurt to try…
@ the Kroger in Rome you do not have to buy all 10 items to get the discount, and the paper does not specify that you do like the CVS paper does when the do a 10/$10, so I would think that you could buy 1 or 10 and still get the $1 deal. It would be worth a shot.
i would def. try. sometimes the kroger events do ring up as $1 just make sure it doesn’t say you’re required the amount. then again some cashiers (but rarely in my experience) just price match but i would atleast try 😛 just buy other event items just incase!
i dont believe you have to buy ALL 10…
My walmart does price match the kroger and other ads that say 10/$10 and even will price match when walgreens or cvs has an in store coupon stating that something is $1.99 and I can use a mfq on top of that. I just wish walmart would make up there mind and make it company wide cause it gets confusing!!
Those are not the limits I think they are referring to in this post, nothing to do with the price matching mega events or 10/10 sales. It is a max quantity that can be purchased so the shelves don’t get cleared.
just want to make sure we don’t get the 2 confused.
My Walmart(Jasper,TX) limits 4 of each price match. Anybody else have this problem?
I live in Ohio and they also limit price matching to four items, unless the ad specifically states “10 for 10” or the like. Also, they told me that in order to price match, the item purchased had to be the identical item in the ad. For example, I wanted to price match salsa from another store. The one in the ad was mild, but I wanted the hot. When I showed the cashier the ad, she stated I could only get what was in the ad-the mild. Is this a new policy as well?
my store doesnt require me to buy 10 for that price. So maybe it varies by stores.
You do not have to buy all 10. You can buy as many as you want. Aleast all the places I go.
Most ads will state “must buy 10” if that is their sale, but if it doesn’t say a minimum purchase is required in the ad the Walmart I use lets me buy any amount I choose. I heart my Walmart big time.
I like it…I hope they “get it”. It makes sense..WM just wants to get reimbursed for their full price on the BOGO coupon , while the consumer still gets the great B1G2Free deal, making it a win-win. I checked out with an assistant manager this weekend and it was my easiest/fastest checkout yet since moving to Katy from Omaha, NE. I just wish they had the resources to have all their staff as well trained as their managers. 🙂

Are we able to price match a coupon from another store’s ad and use a manufacturer’s coupon?
only if it states the price of the item. NOt if it has a $ amount off of an item.
THANK YOU.
I just printed this, so if nothing else I will have it for my own record. Also if I have any questions I will have this to reference to.
So does this really mean that Walmart will match all BOGO free ads? Or is it only the ones that actually say a price along with it: buy 1 at 1.99 get one free?
to me it sounds like they will still only match bogo with the price stated in the add!
That is correct
I’m curious about this as well, because it is a lil confusing.
Only the ones that state the actual price-Buy one at $1.99 Get one Free.
Just ask. My store will price match any BOGO ad.
A few weeks ago I price matched the Kmart Beggin Strips BOGO. It had no price listed. (and used the BOGO MQ)
I sure wish I had this when the Clean and Clear body wash was on sale at Walgreens. I wanted to price match and use my coupons to get them both free, but the people here don’t know anything about their own coupon policy.
So let me see if I got this, If I use a BOGO ad match and 1 BOGO man coupons, then I would be buying 1 and getting 2 free? Or do I use 2 BOGO man coupons on 3 items to buy 1 and get 2 free?
this is one bogo ad match with stated price and 1 MFG coupon. Essentially you would buy one at ad match price and get 2 free.
They need to update their coupon policy with this information, otherwise, I see more drama coming out of Walmart.
i’m wondering can you have a $1 off coupon along with the bogo sale and bogo coupon since you are buying 3 items????
Good question!
I would say yes you can, but you are talking about a lot of stars to be aligned.
well when i worked for walmart as a cashier i know they told me that we didn’t do the ad match on bogo but that we could match the price given if one was but not the free item. i also would like to know if there will be something posted in the stores or else where that we can bring in as proof that corp has made this change other wise most stores will not honor this new policy. And for those of you that have issues with cashiers not price matching it is stated by walmart that the customer does not need to bring the ad in for a price match and all CSM’s know this especially on food items so don’t let them tell you that you have too 🙂
Kathy this was an email from corporate to the managers. I have a manager that gave me a copy
Can we price match register reward items? I was told no at my walmart.
No, you can’t price match register reward items.
Their policy says no but some cashiers will let you do it.
I talked to someone yesterday and they FINALLY got an answer from Corporate on this. They said it is up to the individual store, but they are in the process of making it a corporate policy that they WILL do the price match after RR.
I wonder if they will be allowing a price match after CVS ecb’s?
It would be nice, but I don’t think they should. ECB’s are used on a future purchase so I don’t know why we would be entitled get that. Also CVS has special deals worked out with those vendors for those sales that they get compensated for. Walmart would not get that money. I mean don’t get me wrong if they did I would be on it like kids on candy.
Because the ad-match policy does not specifically state that they will not not match the price of an item after RR, ECB, or +Up my store managers allows it. I was told it’s just like honoring the in ad coupon for an item as a specific price. He also said that corporate allows each store manager to decide if they will pm them.
This is what their policy says regarding getting discounts that require a separate purchase(which is what ECB & RR’s are). I want all the best deals and i love to save money, but it is stated in the policy. 🙂
We DO NOT match the price in the following types of competitor ads:
Items that require a separate purchase to get the ad price
example: “Buy [item A] to get [item B] for $C”
Why would it require a separate purchase? Per that example : You buy item A and you get item B, C and D for free or for a discount because you purchased item A. That does not apply to RR, ECB and +Ups because it is not in those terms in the sale ads. This is how my store manager explained it.
I don’t cover Wamart on my site because I tend not to shop at Walmart (nothing wrong with it…I can never find what I need in there though).
My question is this:
Purchase 3 items at $2.00 = $6.00
Price match BOGO sale ad = – $2.00
Maufacturer BOGO = -$2.00
Final price: $2 for 3 items
THOUGH can you use a $1.00/1 manufacturer coupon then on it also for the one you are paying for?
I would say yes that would be a perfect storm.
So do all stores get reimbursed for the entire face value of the coupon? If so, then why do they always price adjust so that there is no refund? That’s annoying and seems unfair.
I’m pretty sure Target is in a lawsuit over that exact thing and this is what prompted Walmarts policy.
Unless other wise marked on the coupon they do get full value. Like sometimes you’ll see them mark out the price and right in a lower one. But walmart allows overage and if your store does not then you need to start taking your policy in with you to get that overage.
Yesterday I tried out the price match with coupons at my Walmart. Target had the Scotch tape for .50 and I had 12 of the 1.00 off coupons, so I went to Walmart specifically to get the overage toward my groceries. The cashier price matched it with no problem, but when it came to the coupons she had to go ask a manager. When she came back she informed me that a price match does not allow for a coupon overage. So after the transaction was over, I went to talk to the manager and told her that I did not see on the coupon policy the stipulation of a price match to a coupon overage, so she gave me my 6.00 back.
I dont entirely understand this new policy. Why do you need to purchase 3 products. Is is b/c you cant get anything free. What about if I have a full cart of groceries.
If I’m reading the policy correctly, you only need 3 items when price matching a competitor ad that has an item listed as “buy one at $___ get one free” and you are also using a manufacture coupon that has buy one get one free.
You should only have to purchase 2 items if you are just doing the price match.
I don’t understand it either, i tried to use PG on old spice. I had two coupons, one was buy any two items get a $1.00 off, then i had a coupon BOGO, buy any one fresh collection old spice get a spray for free. My walmart told me i had to buy 4 items to get the one free. I argued with them. I did what the coupon said, but they still would not allow me to buy two items and get the third free. Very frustrating on how this crap works anymore, I’m sorry but couponing is not enjoyable anymore due to this.
I dont entirely understand this new policy. Why do you need to purchase 3 products. Is is b/c you cant get anything free. What about if I have a full cart of groceries.
Walmart actually follows the policy the way the MFG intended it to be used. It has nothing to do with free, except that the computers are programmed to not accept a coupon on a free item.
Now it says you have to buy 3 and the examples only pm 2 of those and do full price for the 3rd to get the full cpn amount. Walmart registers will reject any amount over any item scanned/entered price so you have to buy one at full value to get the $2.50 off(as in ex above). So if you pm the shampoo BOGO $1.50($.75each) then the cashier PM only 2 of the items the 3rd to be regularly priced. So it works out as $0.75+$0.75 + $2.50 = $4.00 – $2.50 bogo cpn = $1.50 for all 3. This is the same price it would of been if you only purchased 2 at the pm with out the cpn so your NOT buying 1 and getting 2 its you buy 2 you get 1 free. Of course Walmart would find a way to keep you from being able to get a better deal. Honestly its a better deal to pm 4 for $0.75 each and use 2 BOGO cpn and pay $1.50 for 4. Just tell your cashier its $.75 at so and so’s and then use your bogo cpn to get the better deal.
Kellie, if the bogo ad is Buy 1 at $1.50 and get one free and in your scenario is you would pay $1.50 and leave with 3, isn’t that buy 1 get 2 free?
Per the clarification you would have to purchase 3 but you would only be able to pm 2 of those 3 items. Re-read the clarification no where on there does it say pm 3 it only says to pm 2 and that the customer must buy 3. Also the registers will not allow the cashier to enter $2.50 in on the BOGO coupon if an all items were pm for less than that price. You would get the one you paid full value for free and still pay $1.50 for 2 so its not worth it biased on their clarification. So its not B1G2 its B2G1.
I am going to go with my store manager and Walmart PR, but you may be right.
It doesn’t make any sense for Walmart to explain a policy that NOONE would ever combine. Customers would only ever PM the BOGO ad sale.
Ok this is confusing. I don’t understand why you would only buy 3. Shouldn’t you get 4 and match the BOGO ad. So the cashier would ring each one up for $.75 bringing the total to $3. Then scan the one BOGO coupon and put in $2.50(the Walmart retail) bringing the total to $.50 for 4 items. Would this not work?
No, because it is buy 1 for 1.50 and get one free. This is the only way the system can do it because there is no coupon for the ad match. You are not allowed to use a coupon on a free product, so the “second product” is $.75 allowing a coupon to be used on it.
Wow talk about confusing
I’m just curious as to the source of this memo. My husband works for Walmart and this is nothing that they have been told at this time. The management I know over there doesn’t know anything about it either.
It is a copy of an email sent from Store Operations to be used in MGR’s meeting dated 7/22 for I believe a 7/27 meeting. I have a copy of the whole email I only put out what was relevant to the readers.
I cannot even imagine trying to do a transaction that involved the BOGO price match and a BOGO Mfg coupon in the two stores closest to me. They are not even aware of the coupon policy details that have been on Walmart’s own website since March. I would definitely need a written, official copy of this to take with me and then I would need a checkout line with no one behind me because I can guarantee this would be at least a 30 minute check out and that would just be the time it took to decipher the coupon part of the transaction.
I’m definitely not saying this would be easy. I am just glad to have proof that Walmart is getting this info out to the stores, what they decide to do with it is anyones guess.
Thanks so much for keeping up with all of this for us. I see you said several times this is an excerpt from an email to managers. I agree with the readers who say it will be a rough check-out experience. It would be helpful if you could post a PDF or link to the email so we could print the instructions for the cashier to follow. If the full email isn’t reasonable, could you PDF or link to the relevant portion so we can print better? The jpg format isn’t as helpful.
I was hoping the point would be that at least corporate is addressing issues with the stores. I don’t think this is even really a change, probably could have been done this way the whole time, its really Just a clarification.
Never works the way we plan does it? Probably not a change but yes very good corporate is trying to clarify usage and make it better for us. It’s reassuring to know they are customer focused.
Always nice to be able to hand them something and point if they’re not familiar. Communication to the cashier level in a company that size has to be a monumental challenge! I try to keep that in mind when I bump into one who’s less familiar with the policy. “I want to help you get more familiar….” is the way I usually start as I’m breaking my copy out. Never have a fussy cashier when I go at it like that.
Hey, thanks again for your efforts!
Thanks so much!!!
Walmart will not use a BOGO if the ad does not state the price.
Thanks so much!! I have really saved shopping at Walmart and using coupons with price matching. I do bring all weekly ads with me to shop. I have had to refer to them to help the cashiers save me money!! I have had no use of the ads at the Walmart in Spring, TX. Mentioned that I wanted to price match milk with CVS a couple of weeks ago for $2.99 and the cashier said, “no problem” and put that amount in. I was so shocked to have such an easy experience.—Love saving money!!!
Paul it says the minimum is 3 items. Does that mean per coupon? For instance can I use 2 bogo coupons and ad match 2 bogo’s while buying 4 items? Or does that mean with each deal you have to buy 3 items?
Per this clarification you must buy 3 items for each BOGO cpn and per BOGO pm. So you would have to buy 6 use only 2 BOGO coupons. Also the BOGO coupon takes off the 3rd item purchased. Now if you read the clarifaction it only ever states to pm 2 items but you must buy 3. Since the 3rd item is not pm you pay full price for it so that you can the full value for that cpn. This makes it a B2G1 deal not B1G2. It is better to tell them that its on sale for $1.50 for 2 and is not lye because they are $1.50 wyb 2.
This is very confusing!… Sorry, but I can’t understand the BOGO. For example, we need to buy three items.
– Let’s say that I buy a shampoo at BOGO so, I have 2 bottles. Now, does this mean that I need to buy 2 more BOGO???? I will end up with 6 bottles instead of 3???? I just don’t understand their new policy….
Thanks!
No it means that you need to have a 3rd bottle and pay walmart price for it to use your BOGO cpn and get the full price value. This makes it B2G1.
Kellie, I appreciate your passion, but your interpretation doesn’t make sense. Walmart would never in a million years need to clarify this becasue noone would ever do it. They get a better deal by ad matching the BOGO sale and NEVER even consider using a BOGO coupon on top of it. They are already getting 2 for 1.50 they could get 4 for $3 by ad matching again.
I think you are forgetting the initial scenario of the ad says buy 1 at $1.50 get 1 free which is the premise my scenario is built off of. $.75c each is the only way they can put the ad match in the system because there is no coupon for this. The 3rd item is scanned at $2.50 but it says to enter $2.50 after you scan the coupon which wipes out that $2.50 charge giving 3 bottles for $1.50
It would have been a whole lot easier if they stated a transaction total, and that is what I a trying to get from Corp.
The clarification specifically states to pm ONLY 2 items and that you must buy 3 items. So if they only pm 2 and you have to buy 3 then the 3rd is not pm so it is full price.
Please re-read.
* Ad match should be completed first
-Buy one shampoo @ $1.50 get one free is the Ad Match.
-Walmart’s price is $2.50
*Price override TWO bottles of shampoo that are required in the BOGO ad match to $.75 each(tax) STATES TO ONLY PM 2.
-Review quantities on coupon/ad
*Scan the BOGO Manufacturer coupon and enter $2.50 as that is Walmart’s retail price.
-Ensure that $2.50 is written on the manufacturer coupon.
-A MINIMUM OF 3 ITEMS MUST be purchased(accounted for) when using this ad match/coupon combination
So with that said an accurate example of the bogo pm with bogo cpn clarification :
2 Suave Shampoo $1.50 BOGO = $1.50
1 Suave Shampoo $2.50 = $2.50
1 BOGO Coupon = -$2.50
Total is $1.50 for 3
You are not B1G2 you B2G1
Please explain it in more detail how you get b1g2 from the clarification because I do not see it at all.
I am being really genuine I need you to further explain your interpretation of how you get b2g1. They only other way to work it would to be to do the following and you still do not get b1g2 it would make them all free with overage in the example.
3 Suave Shampoo $2.50 pm to $0.75 each = $2.25
1 BOGO Cpn -$2.50 walmarts retail price
Total = -$0.25
I NEVER said buy2 get 1. I have always said essentially it is buy 1 get 2 even thought the first one is treated as a price match each one for .75.
Total is $1.50 for 3. That is what I have ALWAYS said. go back and read your comments. The AD MATCH is buy 1 for 1.50 get one free.you are able to use the coupon in addition because Walmart makes each item $.75 to do this. thus getting all threre for $1.50. YOU ARE ONLY PAYING FOR 1 AT THE AD PRICE and you are getting 3.
I am sorry I meant B1G2. You do get 3 for 1.50 we agree there I think we are wording them differently that is why I didn’t understand your B1G2 thing I wish I could see it from your side but I don’t I cant get it to make sense mathematically. To me since you still pay $.75 for each of the pm and the 3rd is not pm and the cpm covers the 3rd you still end up paying for 2 and getting the 3rd free so that’s why I asked for more of an explanation because it didn’t make sense. For me it will be a b2g1 w/pm deal.
No Francisco, Please keep in mind this is only in the case that their is a BOGO ad AND and a MFG BOGO coupon at the same time. My understanding is that you would need to “purchase” only 3 items. the first 2 are ad matched at .75 each and the 3rd is rung up @ normal price. the BOGO coupon is then scanned and takes off the $2.50. Thus leaving you with 3 bottles for 1.50.
I talked to the manager today and he tells me that he never saw that memo and dont know what i am talking about….
They do an awesome job with price matching. I love it!
I just went on Saturday. I got $700 for $126 oop!
I pm’d the Albertsons .99 a pd boneless/skinless chkn breast and got 4 huge packs for $5 each! This was my first time trying the meat pm and it was a perfect transaction. Well except the long wait for a csm to approve it with alot of pm’s and q’s but that’s usual for every Walmart transaction I have. But it’s worth the wait for the benefit!
I have a question about ad match and BOGO. Does it have to have the normal price listed on the ad? OR Can the ad just say BOGO? I have never been clear on this one.
Thanks for posting the memo. I can’t wait to try this one out!
it must state the price of item. That is what the BOGO will be based on, not the Walmart price.
Do you have this where we can print it out and take it w/the current coupon policy?
Thank you!

Paul,
I went yesterday to Walmart to try the ad match. And this was the scenerio:
Publix Ad
Thomas Bagels are now BOGO, Retail price is $4.49
Walmart
Thomas Bagels are now $2.47
I went over to the register, told the cashier and showed her the Publix ad for the BOGO for the bagels. She priced the first bag at $2.46 and the second bag for $0.01. Got two bags of Thomas Bagels for $2.47. They didn’t give me the $4.49 price that I would have paid over at Publix. Their policy talks alot about BOGO coupons. Now the question that I have is if I had a m/coupon, could I have given that to the cashier as well????
Yes, you could have and Yes, they did it wrong.LOL
Hi Paul,
My question is why is it required to account for 3 of the items? With BOGO it usually is only 2 items. Example if I do a BOGO at CVS – I put 2 items on counter they are running a BOGO on the item… so one is free – I have a coupon = 2nd is free = Final Both are FREE. So why is it required to have 3 items at Walmart?
I agree with you this memo will confuse the front line more then some are, specially at my Walmart – Shoot I had to walk a manager over to a monitor that had their AD Match commercial running for them to actually believe they accepted AD Match, and he still didn’t understand it.
Also, have you heard back on that email you sent over to Corp?
this is a different scenario. Walmart doesn’t allow 2 MFG coupons when only 2 items are purchased and one of them is a MFG BOGO coupon. A BOGO ad match sale is different in that a it must state the price and Walmart policy is to divide the price in half and place that value on each item. You are then allowed to use the BOGO coupon and will end up getting both items for the 75% off the original price. The reason that it is better at Walmart is that after we get to this total the Cashier is supposed to put in Walmart’s Full retail price for the value of the BOGO coupon. Clear as mud! I have also heard that CVS no longer allows BOGO Coupons on BOGO sales but I have not confirmed that myself.
Example:
Toothpaste BOGO Sale Buy 1 @ $2.00 get one Free
Walmart Price :$2.00
Cashier Rings in the each toothpaste @ $1.00
MFG BOGO Coupon is Rang Up taking the Full Walmart Price of $2.00 both
Total: FREE
Thanks Paul, understand where you are going… but what I didn’t understand was why a third item?
The section that said : 2. You should now be able to use a BOGO Mfg coupon in addition to a price match BOGO sale.
a)You will need 3 items to do this type of transaction.
b)Your transaction will not be completely free. In example 1 you will get 3 items for $1.50
On the CVS – If they are running a BOGO sale on a product – you are are able to use a BOGO – I think the policy was just updated a month or so ago and is listed on corp site. I have only been back to CVS once for this for the Biore BOGO and did very well with it. Actually at three of them locally and cashiers were very coupon aware – and their policy – very refreshing these days…lol
if you want to use the second coupon you will have to purchase a 3rd item
Hello there! I live in Michigan and let me tell you my store CSM’s are a piece of work. I have been in there to price match and the CSM tells me that they do not price match rite aid or walgreen’s reward card prices listed in ad. When I showed them the corporate print out of the price match they still refused. What should I do?
calmly explain to them the difference between Reward Card Pricing and Register Rewards. You can only match Reward card pricing not After Register Rewards. I hope that helps!
