I thought I should go check out using competitors coupons and catalina’s at my Walmart to see what happened. My wife was POSITIVE they were not going to let me use the catalina’s.
The first trip through, that didn’t get filmed… I guess you get what you pay for 🙂 Good thing my wife is cute, she thought she was filming and actually turned the camera on when she thought she turned it off!
O.K. back to the first trip through… this is what I used:
- I had the Walgreens progresso soup coupon ( you can see it on the bottom of the ad in the post below)
- $1/4 Progresso manufacturer coupon
- I also used the $.99 soft soap from Walgreens ad.
- $1.50 Coke catalina from Kroger
- $1.00 Dr. Pepper coupon from Kroger.
Normally, I would have picked this kid to check out with because you know he could care less. I wanted someone who was a grouchy cashier but there wasn’t any available. He took everything with no problem, the catalina’s beeped, and he just overrode them. No problems at all. I should have bet my wife something!!
We decided to go through again, with a different cashier to see if we had any trouble. You can see this transaction in the video. Again, I used 2 catalina’s and had no problems.
It was a good experience which opened up a TON of questions…
- Will they take Walgreens Register Rewards?? I would love to use these on meat and dairy or things that there are not coupons on.
- Will they use the $ off $$ catalina’s?
- Plus a ton more ( but we are watching “Night and Day” and it is really good and I am totally distracted!)
Anyway, this was a great learning experience. This is the thing though, you are going to have to do a little pushing at your Walmart if you are having problems doing any of this. CALL Corporate, and express your concerns and ask them to call your store and TALK TO YOUR MANAGERS!

I went to Walmart today. I had the bogo coupon for Kellogg speciak k. I asked the cashier if Walmart takes competitors coupons and she said yes. So I gave her the manufactures bogo coupon and the Target coupon for $1. At the end of the checkout when she scanned the coupons she said I could only use one coupon for the cereal, so I chose the bogo. So I guess this means my Walmart takes competitor coupons. It also means no stacking, and it also means I am extactic I can use more coupons at Walmart. Yippeeee

No blood shed?….. Pretty impressive! I was worried you had really taken one for the team this time. I’m happy and will venture to do the same experiment I have 2 SC and 1 in transition around me.

Hmmm…It will be interesting to see what happens next time. Please let us know! I have had the same experience with Target store coupons. One time they took them and the next time they did not. I am scanning cashiers more closely.

Awesome Job Paul – I am NOT a fan of Walmart – however I’m going to test them in our area today and see what happens – I seriously believe this is a YCMV (your cashier may vary) type of thing which is sad!

What’s the best way to ‘scan’ cashiers? I get so frustrated every time I go in because its a different story different day. I always seem to pick the wrong lane.

I wish my Walmart (in Deer Park) was like the one you visit. Mine will not accept a coupon if the value of the coupon is more than the product cost. I have given up going there.

I would be curious to know whether this means we can also use the great $5 off box of pampers/huggies coupons that Babies R Us puts out. I guess yes technically. In practice, I am not so sure.

I went today too. The cashiers are still needing training. My gal did not know how to do it and had to call over a CSM I told her the CSM how to over ride it. So , for me a little South of Houston I had an issue. But, I also had my policy to respond if needed.
Thanks for the video…..

FYI, those Swiss Miss printable Qs that were available a few days ago: (they didn’t specify size limit or quanity, they said ($2 off any Swiss Miss Cocoa). I used mine at my superWM without any problems the other day.
I bought 4 pkgs. of Swiss Miss cocoa for $1each, 2 pkgs of Yoplait Smoothies, and $0.30 worth of bananas. I used 2 of the $2 Swiss Miss Qs and 2 of the $1/1 Yoplait Smoothie Qs-from the 1/2 RP.
The Swiss Miss Qs rang up for the whole $2 off, without beeping! You should have seen how big I smiled. I walked out of their paying $3.30 for 4 boxes of cocoa, 2 smoothie paks, and some bananas!! YIPPEE!!

Good job… From what I can see, you picked a cashier I would have avoided… So, what do I ln
Judy says
When I “scan” cashiers I do the following: avoid older men & women, look at the overall mood of the cashiers (find the happy ones!). Avoid anyone who looks like they are on their last hour of their shift.

I know this is a WalMart site, but i used an $8 Mucinex Walgreens RR at Target and the register said something about “another store” but it easily overrode it. It is a manufacter coupon after all…

Hey, its all about where to get a good deal :0

i was recently a cashier at walmart for 2 years. with the catalinas as long as it says manufacturers coupon at the top and has the 2 barcodes on it, it will work.

Paul–
I have a question about the Walgreens coupon you used. Let’s say you bought two soft soaps that you were using the walgreens ‘coupon’/price match for, would you have to use two coupons? (ie: get two walgreens ads and cut out the coupon?) The reason I ask is because at walgreens, their in-ad coupons and IVC coupon books automatically multiply the savings based on how many products you buy…. is that the case with using the same coupon at walmart? not a big deal, either way, would just like to know what i’m walking into!
You should also try to use the walgreens coupon book–i believe those are technically manufacturer coupons, so would they work??
Thanks for being brave enough to try all this out before we do!
Paul says
I think you only need 1 coupon, because it says a limit on the coupon. That is when the “coupon” essentially becomes a price match.
