I spent 2-3 hours today planning for 1st big price match trip. Everything organized, no suprises. SUPRISE, it was a MAJOR fumble. From a horrible checker to a crabby manager, to wrong price codes, coupons not scanning and 2 kids who lost their patience after 40 minutes at the check out. We cried our way to the nearest corner store and indulged in icecream pops all around. I am seriously disappoints and totally reconsidering this whole couponing thing! Advice, anyone?
I have been there so, so, sooo many times. But with 3 kids (all 4 & under). I have to say the ice cream pops is a great way to celebrate defeat, good job! I usually drive straight home feeling miserably depressed & whine nonstop in my husband’s ear, even though I have numerous successful trips for every 1 bad trip.
My husband is my support & that’s the only thing that keeps me going. I’m a person who is easily overwhelmed so this isn’t exactly my cup of tea but my husband & I have been couponing for about a year & 1/2 and it’s been an amazing blessing. We’ve learned hard lessons & lots of them. Think of these bad experiences as learning opportunities. No matter how good you get, there will always be something more to learn! We still have miserable trips, just not as often. In the past 6 months my avg savings went from 50% to about 70% but it took us a year to get to that point. In the beginning, it was worse. For about a month, we had very little success but once you score one awesome deal, that’s all you need to keep you going.
The best advice is start small. Really, really small. Our transactions we’re for 1-3 different items at first. At Walgreens, I still do less than 10 items. The more you add to one transaction, the more complicated things will get.
Also, know your stuff! Know the policies, read every detail of the coupon, etc… then you’re guaranteed to take the lead if you have to defend yourself. If you do have to stand up for yourself, do it with grace & be kind. Think of it as teaching them, not arguing.
Don’t be afraid to walk away from a deal/transaction that doesn’t work out. Another deal (usually better) will come along eventually.
And last, go shopping without the kids, if at all possible. That’s when my shopping trips go smoothest & cause me the least amount of stress (not only me, the cashiers, the kids, other people shopping… everyone wins!).
Best of luck & never give up!!!
Thanks Nadia. I have been having ok luck with couponing, it was the price matching that kicked my butt! I am thinking (aside for definatly not having the kids next time!) that I will post it note and seperatly bag items from each different flyer. I felt that the cashier was acting as if I was taking every penny saved right out of her pocket. I cashier profile, I like the men under 40, they are fast at the register and seem to really understand the price matching well. This lady argued every thing and had to go double check it with someone else. She would price match oreo’s because the ad said “Chocolate Oreo Cookies” and my package said “Oreo’s” AHHHHHHH. Your right just before this I happened on a GREAT deal at Wags, they had Charimin marked down to sale price of Cottenelle because it was gone and I had coupons for them all, STOCKPILE! Back at it again today. Thanks again for the boost.
I meant she WOULDN’T price match the oreos, see it still gets me all flustered. Did I mention there was 1, yes ONE, isle open that was not a self check or 10 items or less…
Start with small transactions….best advise I can give you. Don’t give up. You can really save some serious $$$!
I agree with you Cindy. Small transactions are the best for a beginner. I am very new with price match and coupons. Like today I went to Wal-Mart for 2 boxes of Nice n Easy hair dye. Regular price $6.97. Matched price with CVS ad for 2.99 and had a coupon for 2.00 off each. Final price $2 + taxes. Loved what I saw and I am NOT going back to my old ways!!!!
Questions: Will Walmart price match the General Mills treat bars sale price ($2) or the price with an HEB ($1) in-store coupon? Then they should take the $.50 coupon on top of the price match, right?
Kudos to you and your wife for all of your help saving!!!
I’m down in Katy. In your experience will walmart match the “with coupon price” at HEB or are they matching the pre-coupon price. You know how HEB has the in-store coupons….
Looks like my HEB doesn’t have the same sales 🙁 My ad is different than the one you have shown. I sure was hoping for the $0.50 duncan hines. I do see that my local HEB has the KC Masterpiece BBQ sauce for a $1 and I have a $0.50 Q off any BBQ sauce or marinade 🙂
OK so this isnt Wal-Mart or HEB but the Chips bags are $5.99 at Target $12 wyb 2 – $2 coupon = $10
These are the 23 packs though….
Paul On price matching with HEB if the add says it is a certain price with in-store coupon will Wal-Mart match it?
Thank You
yes, mine do
I have fumbled to and I am a serious couponer. I suggest start small. Do two
or three items first. Things like soap, razers, bodywash, deodorant. All make good small starts. It will get your confidence up. I find it best to shop alone without children. I may get distracted and not give a coupon or forget to have by CVS tag scaned for using my own bag. Try again. Good luck
