Need something to finish your childs room but can’t find it in the store? Now you can customize their very own wall letters and do it all with supplies you can find at your local Walmart store for under $20.00! You can also make these for just decorative words like Home Sweet Home, Love, and more!
You will need:
- Wooden Letters $1.47ea
- Mod Podge $4.67
- Paint Brushes Under $4.00
- Fabric (Buy by the yard or quilt square packages were $8.97)
- Scissors
- Pens/Pencils
- Command Hooks (optional) or other means of hanging letters
Step 1: Decide what word/name you will be making and what color fabric you want for each letter. You will then need to trace (lightly) around the letter onto the back side of the fabric as shown. (Pattern needs to be on the bottom). Lesson learned for tracing lightly, if you don’t trace lightly or use a like colored pen to the fabric it will bleed through when applying to the letters in the next step.
Step 2: Cut on the outer side of your traced shape, you can always go back and trim down further if there’s too much fabric for your letters.
Step 3: Take your paintbrush and apply a very light coat of Mod Podge to the wooden letter. Less is more (another lesson learned) when applying. Slowly apply your fabric letter and be sure to smooth it out as you go to prevent bubbles. Don’t push too hard on the fabric as the Mod Podge will come through the fabric.
Step 4: After applying your fabric entirely you may notice some slight fraying to the fabric, you can either trim this off or apply heat from a lighter to it super quick (too long and you get burnt fabric marks)
Step 5: Allow letters to dry overnight before testing them. You can then apply Command Hooks and hang your personalized new homemade word/name you made on a budget!
