This is a really hot topic right now and many of you are really confused. I have been reading all the comments and I feel your frustration. I decided to call corporate again today after reading where a few of you had called and got a very disconcerting answer. I was told today that NOWHERE in the policy nor have there been any revisions that state you cannot price match and then use a MFG coupon.
The only confusion I can possibly see is if they thought you were trying to use a Competitor coupon and price match. If you continue to run into this issue try and have this conversation. Ask why that wold be when the coupons don’t cost the company anything, in fact the company comes out better with the .08 for S&H. Logically they should be encouraging a coupon after a price match to recoup a little of the cost of the PM. I hope this helps and keep working, we are leading the revolution!
I too called after trying to price match Walgreens BOGO body wash deal one CSM said it was ok to also use the BOGO MF Q then another said no we dotn give things for FREE even though everything in my basket was free LOL
The Manager called yesterday and told me he was looking into it that price matching is new and a lot of cashiers dont have a clue!
So still I don’t have an answer everyone seems really confused!!!
I worked at Walmart back in the late 90s, and they did price matching back then also. I know this because part of my job was to do price comparisons in other stores and then mark my items down a few cents lower than that. If we missed a certain item, the cashier was to price match. Don’t let them tell you that price matching is a new thing. Maybe the cashier was actually new instead?
Tami you are so right. I literelly have not shopped Wal’mart since the late 90s but i remember when you walked in the store all that random merchandise that is there now by the entrance used to be like a wall of savings where they did all the work for us and scoured the target and local adds and marked theirs down a few cents cheaper. then they would staple the competitors add to the price match sign as proof. if target had reynolds foil on sale for 2.99 they would mark it down in the computer for 2.96 and staple targets add to the display. it was great. price matching was only reserved for what they missed! those where the days when walmart was fun to shop. they used to say HI WELCOME TO WALMART when you came in . Now they give you dirty looks and snatch your bags when the sensormatic machine goes off.
I just came from my Wal-Mart superstore, and I did a price match on the Tylenol Precise ($5 this week at Rite Aid.) I bought 10 and used 10 of the $5 off coupons without a problem from the cashier.
The only issue I had was having to wait at the checkout for almost an hour to get a manager to come over to turn a key on the register for all of my coupons so that I could pay for my order! The people behind me were getting irritated, and the poor girl at the checkout ended up working 30 minutes after her shift had ended. She wasn’t irritated with me, but with WM for having only one manager working at the time to handle the entire store! She was really nice about it though : )
Walmart needs to have coupon check out lanes !!!!!
No way because then the line would be a mile long!
Their self-checkout lanes have the option to scan any coupons. I’ve tried it and it was better to deal with the coupons myself rather than hand them over to a cashier.
I’ve had no problem price matching and using a manufacturer’s coupon on the same product. I did it the other day on pizza rolls. I’m in St Louis, MO. I did have a little challenge with the 1 cent Target price match on the Carefree liners, but I did prevail.
BTW… thanks for the tip on the JMS clothing on clearance. I got 5 shirts for a $1 each and used 5 of the $5 off coupons. I was able to get other clearance clothes for the kiddos and other stuff too! Whoo Hoo! I love overage!
Ha, I’m in St. Louis too and I had the same problem with the Target Carefree coupon. Go figure!
Hello i live in irving tx I was shopping at walmart today i had my basket full and all my sales ads everything went smooth i handed my coupons over they went in fine since i exceeded the 40 coupon limit a csm had to come over i was told that i could not use coupons with price matching i brought out the coupon policy but she still refused i had to leave my cart behind
My store refuses to let me use coupons with a price match. It would be really helpful if they did. My walgreens and CVS are wiped clean of everything.
Paul, I love the pic you used for this post!! lol
I had a horrible experience today. What about when you have a competitor’s coupon, AND a manufacturer’s coupon? Today I went in and bought 4 of the lunchables with fruit. I had a competitor’s ad which stated “1.29 each with in-ad coupon.” Usually when I have an item that states that in the ad, they just do a price match and don’t even ask for that competitor’s coupon. But I put my items on the counter and told the cashier I had a price match. She seemed mad that I even had a price match. She then stated “it says with in-ad coupon, do you have the coupon?” So I gave her the competitor’s store coupon and she stated that they don’t take other stores coupons and handed it back to me. I said yes it states it in your coupon policy. She stated they don’t take them again, so I said “well you’ll need to call a csm because it states it in your coupon policy that you do.” So the csm told her yes to scan it, and so she did, then I handed her my manufacturer’s coupons—which I had four of them, for $1.00 off each. She then walked away and evidently talked to a csm and then came back and scanned them. She handed me my change and I told her to have a nice day and she said nothing. Was I wrong in stacking the coupons, and first of all should they have just priced matched it without the competitor’s coupon? I thought I was correct but after reading this most maybe I wasn’t, but sure would like to know for the future, I certainly don’t want to be doing something that violates the policy.
No you were right. I have price matched the walgreens in store coupons that state a price and not cent off. But they never take them from me or scan then because they do them no good. They dont remit them for refund if they are the other stores coupon. But you were just price matching and using a coupon which I do every other day at Walmart! : )
Whew! Trying to price match and use a coupon is exhausting! I went to Walmart (3388 store in Lawrenceville, GA) and tried the price match walgreen’s clean and clear deal. I asked the cashier to make the price of 1 $5.99 and the 2nd $00.00 so I could use my coupon. “We do not price match to a higher price.”
The walmart price was $4.97. “That’s ok” I said, “I have a coupon so will get it free and you (walmart) will be reimbursed $5.99 plus a handling fee.” the cashier seemed totally befuddled and called over a manager. The manager said “you have to choose–price match or coupon.” I again said I should be able to use both. This manager went to the big manager and came back and said smugly “you have to chose one or the other.” I chose to get my coupons back and only got 4 3packs ivory soap and 6 packages of carefree liners for a grand total of 33 cents. (Another little issue since 2 of my carefree coupons were walgreens catalinas). I then went to a different walmart and they were much friendlier! I got 8 bottles of clean and clear for $1.44.
I wish walmart would educate their staff on coupons! I even printed out their policy, but at the first store they said “we were told, one or the other.” I think walmart is trying to woo us couponers back–they still have a ways to go, in my opinion!
I also had a problem in CA with being told either the price match or the coupon. They were confused as to how to use both so just told me I couldnt. I was so upset!
SO I am confused….if we are ad matching Walgeens at BOGO and using a MF for BOGO do we not have to actually buy 1 to get one?? I am all about paying nothing OOP but this situation just seems weird….it seems wrong that we are buying nothing and getting it all free.
So, can I price match at Wal-mart for say something that is measured by weight? Like chicken for example, if my grocery store has thighs for so much a pound, and i can get the same kind of chicken at Wal-mart, will they match the add? Just curious if anyone tried this before.
Sonya,
This is going to be a hot issue with the warmer weather and fresh fruits and veggies ….
I have price matched with produce and meats without a problem.
The policy states: “when the price is offered in the same unit type (lb. for lb. ; each for each) …. as always just remember to have a copy of the policy with you and be as nice as possible if a situation arises.
I have not had the problem yet, but you never know. When it does happen I am ready— I have a copy of the new coupon policy in my coupon folder. Hopefully, this will solve the problem. Has anyone else tried this? When the new policy was announced, the article I read suggested having a copy of the new policy with you just in case……
I keep the copy on me as well and I have pulled it out to prove that I am right and I always get my way because of it. I feel like if your right then your right! : )
I have never had a problem price matching and using a coupon. It has always been a smooth ride for me!!!
Do you guys (gals 🙂 PM and hand a coupon w item? I’ve never had a problem but I PM items as I put them up and give a pile of coupons at the end…
i do the same, price matching as i check out and then handing over all the coupons at the end.
Yes, I do. I put the price match items at the end of my transaction in a group with the ad and my manufacturer’s coupons. I also have a copy of the ad match policy with me. Am now also taking the coupon policy, but it does not say no or yes to using both an ad match and a man. coupon. I have found good/bad cashiers (and csms and managers) vary at the stores I go to! I try to be a considerate shopper; don’t clear a shelf, don’t try to use expired coupons or not buy the correct item for my coupon. I am just a mom trying to save where I can!
I went to Walmart this morning in OCala, FL. The cashier was really mad by the end of my order. I price matched the Clean and clear body wash and gave my BOGO coupon and they only wanted to give $3 for the coupon instead of $5.99. They ended up giving me the $5.99 coupon but said that isn’t how their matching policy works. They split the $5.99 price for the two items, one was $3 and the other $2.99 so they were only going to give the $3…
I tried to get the store here in CA to do that for me and they still wouldnt! They said its not how it works. I was wanting them for free like they should have been but I would have still been willing to pay $1.50 each instead of $5.99! But they wouldnt have it!
when a coupon is for 1.00 off and the item is. 97 do they have to give you the overage? they just wrote .97 on my coupon which of corse the item was still free but i was trying to see if the rest would go toward lowering the price of my remaining items.
The policy states: “if the coupon value exceeds the value of the item, the excess may be given to the customer as cash or applied toward the basket purchase”
Personally, I have never walked out of a Mart with money given back to me… it has always been used towards the rest of my items …. never have had a problem with it.
My manager said we can only get a price match or use a coupon. We are not allowed to use both. Also stating it is her decision to make.We here in Marion SC have the craziest Wal-Mart.
My store will price match and let me use a coupon and on Tuesdays they double coupons up to $1.00 to compete with a local grocery store that does so. But they only double coupons for things that are price matched to that exact store or at their price. And they take the money that is to be doubled out of the item. There are so many mistakes!
The other day I went in and instead of price matching my Betty Crocker fruit snacks to $0.98 from the stores ad and then doubling my $0.50/2 coupon making them just $0.50 a box instead of $2.00 a box! But the cashier wasnt paying attention and was charging me $11.00 for each box for some reason and I was too busy keeping all three toddlers under control and I over paid by $72.49! Yikes! I guess its easy I become overwhelmed when I get to the register! Sheesh! : P
What I was told was that when dealing with a price match and a in store coupon that you could do one or the other but not both as they saw it as “double dipping”. So I usually end up doing the price match and a MQ.
The double dipping thing is made up and walmart is just run by a bunch of morons who don’t read their own policies and don’t care enough to make ONE phone call to their OWN home office so that the problems never happen again.. i’ve had the same problem with price match and a coupon. In one transaction i price match mayo 2/$4 and used a $1/2 coupon then on the next item i comped hormel subs for 2/$3 and was going to use a $1/1 manufacturer coupon on those and they said i had to choose and i said you JUST did this exact thing with the mayo why can’t i do it on the subs? i was basically told if i wanted that deal i need to go to walgreens where the ad was from so i said alright i’ll just tell home office you want me to take my business to walgreens. HOME OFFICE said YES YOU CAN TAKE MANUFACTUERS COUPON AND COMP, comping is just a service wal-mart provides for its customers it has NOTHING to do with using a coupon, they are reembursed for the coupon value so it shouldn’t matter at all.
I went to Walmart today and price match Lysol toilet bowl cleaner, 2/$5 plus i had a 1/2 coupon but the cashier wouldn’t scan it bc supossely cant “double dip” I was soooo Mad but I was in a rush and couldnt talk to the manager. When i got home i called Walmart and spoke with the mananger and he told me the same thing. So, am I wrong? or what can i do, PLEASE HELP!
Something to remember when we go in to shop is that the cashiers don’t always know everything. They’re working lower-paying jobs and unfortunately, don’t always care. As the daughter of a corporate employee, I always try to remember this and be extra kind and respectful. It’s a hard job that often results in frustrated customers yelling and generally being rude over and over. Put yourself in their position before you take the defensive. I’m just glad they are there at all so I can keep getting the best prices for my family.
I was @ Wal-Mart the other day and did a price match on the Nivea lip care. No problem. Well when I tried to use the coupons I had for $3 off the cashier said they can only do one or the other. Price match or coupons. I have never had any issues before. She even called over a manager who told me the same thing. Did they recently change the policy?
No, they have not changed the policy. You have to get a “salaried member of management” in situations like that. This does not include CSM’s.
I ran into that problem today. I used the CVS ad to price match then had a coupon causing overage. My first mistake was going at a time that my normal cashier was not there. The cashier first handed me back 4 of my 5 coupons saying “you can only use one coupon per purchase.” Apparently this made her mad so she started manually keying the coupons in for 65 cents less then they were. When I tried to ask her why she was keying in a random amount she stated that she was not going to pay me to take the product. She wasn’t even keying in the amount of the product, she was keying a lower price. She then got a manager to come over and tell me that they were not going to price match and take a coupon. So I had them cancel the whole transaction and give me back my coupons. If I had thought about it while I was there I would have asked why she was keying in an amount for the coupon even though the manager said they would not take both coupon and price match. I learned my lesson of not going at a time that is not normal for me and using someone I have never worked with. If there had not been a line of people behind me in a hurry I would have went into more detail with them but I do not like to cause other customers to wait. This was the last straw for me. Sorry but I am no longer using Wal Mart ever again and I am a customer that goes every Sunday morning to do ALL of my shopping. They have lost me my family and any one who asks me where to shop.
i am a cashier at walmart, there is no reason why she shouldnt have given you the overage, it clearly states in our coupon policy that we do give overages, and at walmart you can price match and use a coupon, you can also use a competitors coupon on top of a mfg coupon on one item at my walmart in peru, il. the way we see it is we are being good to our customers and making money on the coupons, the only real thing i see us losing money on is the price matching but we dont care because we like to keep our customers happy, and a csm is a manager no matter how you see it, customer service manager.
I would love to be able to find something to print that states that you can use a coupon with the walmart price match. All I have found is the coupon policy, and then the Price match policy separately. I know that these are two different policy’s and that they don’t really have anything to do with each other, but the Walmart in Abilene,Tx thinks that they do, and they are trying to tell use that we can’t use both. So, could you please help me with this? Thanks, Bill
If you can find anything that has both those items combined on it saying that we can use a coupon with price matching i would love to print a copy of it myself i think it would really help
