My Friend Roland from Coupon Pro emailed this to me. It is really important and I wanted to share.
From Coupon Pro Blog:
BREAKING: Recall of Excedrin, NoDoz, Gas-X and Bufferin
JANUARY 8, 2012 – Novartis Consumer Health (NCH) is voluntarily recalling all selected bottle sizes of Excedrin and NoDoz products with expiration dates of December 20, 2014 or earlier as well as Bufferin and Gas-X Prevention products with expiration dates of December 20, 2013 or earlier, in the United States. What’s the reason? Because the products may contain stray tablets, capsules, or caplets from other Novartis products, or contain broken or chipped tablets.
Here are the full recall details:
- Excedrin Recall 2012 (click links on left for exact products recalled details)
- NoDoz Recall 2012
- Bufferin Recall 2012
- Gas-X Recall 2012
This is huge for couponers because many of these products released coupons quite often. I just found a bottle of Excedrin Extra Strength with an expiration date of February 13 in my medical drawer, so please check check check because I know many of you may have these products. And spread the word by sharing this post!
How to get a refund on your recalled products?
If you have any of the products stated, make sure to contact the Novartis Consumer Relationship Center at 1-888-477-2403 (available Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time) for information on how to return the affected products and receive reimbursement. 🙁 I just stocked up on Excedrin a few weeks ago with a great sale/coupons at CVS. Do you have any idea if you have to send in a new form with each bottle/product? The form says you’ll be reimbursed for the product(s) but doesn’t exactly leave room for multiple products.
Thanks for the info!

i was wondering that as well because I have many products that I stocked up on that are part of the recall. thanks

I had the same question and called in today. You must filled out a separate form for each bottle, but they can be shipped in the same package. Totally stinks!
Tien says
Alisa, thanks for letting us know. I called like 10 times today but kept getting the busy message from them.
This totally sucks.
January says
Alisa – thank you so much for answering the question. I tried calling and all I got was a message that said they couldn’t help me at this time and to call back later

Does anyone know if it is only certain sizes? Or is it all sizes for the specific product?

I went to the http://www.fda.org website to get the exact numbers for the products. It seems that just because something has the qualifying expiration dates they aren’t necessarily in the recall. I have several bottles and don’t really want to open each box to read the other numbers that they say you have to have to qualify. If a pink pill falls out among the white ones, do you think it shouldn’t be there and be taken? Do your diligent research first. Mailing in the bottles and finding out that they don’t qualify means you’re going to be out the postage. Don’t view this as a possible money maker for product that you got free or with good coupons.

Hi. Can you tell me where you found the exact numbers for the qualifying items? I was just at the store Sunday morning & bought several of these items. I also bought some 2 weeks ago. I have a person that takes Excedrin all the time that is mentally handicapped & she would not think to look at the meds to make sure they are what they are supposed to be. Thank you in advance.

Here is the link to the article on the FDA.gov website:
http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/SafetyInformation/SafetyAlertsforHumanMedicalProducts/ucm286265.htm
As to “exact numbers for the products”, the FDA states that “voluntarily recalling all lots of over-the-counter products Excedrin, Bufferin, Gas-X Prevention and NoDoz”. Notice the wording “ALL LOTS” of those pills. It does not state that there is a recall for particular lot numbers, it states ALL lots.
By the way, fda.ORG is some advertisement site that is set up to resemble the real site. It is NOT affiliated with the government. A government site will end with .GOV. (It is kind of like the porn site that set up shop at whitehouse.com…. This was a nasty surprise to people looking for whitehouse.gov)

Thanks for the heads up, my husband uses the Excedrins all the time, found quite a few that are recalled.

I checked the FDA website and COULD NOT find any info pertaining to this recall. This is (as of now) a voluntary recall by Novartis and not required by the FDA. The links Paul provided above provide all the current info available on this recall and how to receive your refunds.

I took Excedrin PM 2 weeks ago and broke out in blistering itching welts. We thought it was the Excedrin, but we weren’t sure, now we are pretty sure that was it.

http://www.webmd.com/news/20120109/bufferin-excedrin-nodoz-gasx-recall?ecd=wnl_nal_wmh_010912 this website tells about the recalls and says that there is a chance that they could contain stray pills and/or prescription pain meds.

I was able to get through the line. They will reimburse the suggested retail price for the product and a $2 shipping charge for each bottle returned. You do not need a receipt and they do not need to be in the box (they will still honor it without the UPC). A separate form needed for each return.
Kristi says
I was told that Walmart is taking back all open & unopened bottles with no receipt required… do you know if this is true?
Kaye Leonard says
when will excedrin back and body be back on the market?
