I am really hoping that this didn’t happen to one of my readers. You can read a bloggers story over here about how a situation was handled at her store when she pulled out her coupon policy. It seems that if she is recalling her story exactly, that her store was SERIOUSLY out of line. Not really the kind of Mothers Day story I want to post, but since I found it completely crazy and interesting to read I thought you might also!

Wow that’s crazy! I thought i had had some issues with Walmart before, but not anymore! Lol. I’ve never ended up in a police car!
If this is true, I hope I read it again on this major news network! And that the Assistant Manager has lost her job!
If this is true, I hope I read it again on a major news network! And that the Assistant Manager has lost her job!
So, is it true that EACH Walmart can determine their own policy or not?
That is crazy! I think I would have to report it to walmart corporate office. I feel that manager needs to be fired. ALL THE INFORMATION WAS IN BLACK AND WHITE!!! Its not like she wrote it herself.
That’s crazy!! Although it doesn’t surprise me at all, when the target 1c coupon came out for carefree pantyliners I took a few of them to my walmart and that was a big issue. The cashier, an older lady, was actually nice about it she just didnt know what the register action was, was she supposed to adjust the price or scan the coupon so she called a supervisor. Here she comes, an even older lady, she told me i couldnt use them bc walmart doesnt sell them for that price, i told her that in the policy it stated that walmart price matches everything, i even had a coupon for each of the carefree packages, so she told me she was gonna call the manager. At this point she was treating me like i was stealing from her directly trying to get panty liners for a penny lol when the manager came i explained to her that it was price matching not a coupon, she kept saying that the coupon needed a valid address for them to get their money back, and i repeated to her that it wasn’t a manufacturers coupon that it was just a price match. Well she got aggravated and told me she was gonna have to call someone about it, i politely asked the cashier lady to remove the items from my bill until it got sorted out. She came back in a hell of the mood bc whoever she talked to told her exactly what i had been saying, she yelled at the poor old lady at the register to just override the regular price and give me the 1 cent price lol, i just couldnt help but laugh coming out of the store bc of the big deal they made out of nothing. Even the cashier was laughing at all the drama. Funny thing was even at the register was posted a sign that said we match competitors prices and accept competitors coupons. That was an interesting shopping trip lol
I hate to say this, but I have been the manager in this type of situation before. It is NEVER that black and white (not talking race here). “Raising a voice” isn’t always the main factor. Was there body language or “cornering” involved? I know it’s easy to jump on the poor customer-bandwagon, but sometimes we couponers can get aggressive in tone and demeanor. Other customers coming to your defense may not have read all the ques. Calling the police may have just been a way of her immaturity getting the best of her and not being able to handle the situation. (and the police almost ALWAYS encourage you to force some kind of charged on them…DTP, tresspass etc) The manager felt that she was in the right for some reason, and boy I have been on both sides of the fence here. There are people out there that HAVE TO BE RIGHT AT ALL COSTS…BOTH customers and managers. If you get one of each that are that way…sparks. I have chosen to let this stuff go. It’s not worth the trouble of a crying child and my blood pressure to be right. I would rather go in the next day with a newly printed policy and speak to the main manager in person and express how frustrating it is to have been treated without respect and have to make the extra effort to return and get this policy straightened out. That goes a lot further than pushing it and getting everyone upset.
I’m sorry, but for 4 other employees to back her up and go against a manger like that…. I’d say the customer was the actual victim!
i would be interested in learning the aftermath of this story… the true insult for me as the fact that wm covered their bad pr with a legal order not to discuss and a measly $1k gift card… that right there tells me they knew they were in the wrong and they wanted to minimize the fall out. despicable.
I am not surprised. Fri. night my SIL and I along with a friend were shopping Walmart. I was put through no hassle, my SIL was given a bit of hassle and when it came to our friend (who is new to couponing, and probably won’t use them again) the cashier told her she had to do it a little differently and asked for the coupons up front and matched to every item (taking about an hour to do so). She repeatedly told our friend that there would be no coupon fraud in her store. She was a CSM!! Walmart is about to lose 3 shoppers here and I will tell you even using coupons we spend 10,00 or more a yr. then add in coupons (which they get paid for, but apperantly they have never told the cashiers this as they all think that money comes straight out of their check) that is quite a loss where I am from.
That story really doesn’t surprise me.
It amazes me that none of the cashiers seem to know a thing about the new policy. In my store, they are attached to the registers on the customer side and in front of the cashier and they still are clueless.
My last two trips using coupons for an amount over the cost of the item has been a headache. (not to mention the trip with a catalina) Both cashiers tried to make up reasons why I could not use the coupons when the register asked the cashier “valid coupon amount?”.
I had a bad experience at one Walmart near me, recently. I had a few of the $1/1 coupons on ANY Degree deoderant. I went to the register to use them for the trial size (again the coupon said ANY with no exclusions or inclusions for size or type or anything). My order was small – with only one other item – so it wasn’t a complicated order. The cashier gave me fits. She kept saying you always have to use these on a specific size, and that I couldn’t use them on the trial size. I pointed out that it said ANY with no size specs, etc. She kept reading it over and over. She called her supervisor over who also kept saying she didn’t think they could be used on trial size while she looked at some “Master” list. Anyway, long story short, the cashier on two occassions said “They always come in here and get us on these.” I let it go without comment, but was wondering who “THEY” were. People using legitmate coupons on legitimate purchases? Finally, the supervisor said to go ahead an ring it up – that they weren’t losing any money cause the vendor would reimburse the full amount. I’m very careful about using coupons on the correct items, so it’s very annoying to find myself lumped into the obviously criminal “THEY” category.
Just incase no one has pointed this out, but as a former employee from Walmart ‘they’ was not refering to you. It was in reference to the people who come down on the cashier and thier manager at the time the accept a counterfit coupon. Yours sounds legit but there are so many fakes cashiers can get in trouble for accepting them. When that happens they have to deal with thier manager, who in turn, had to deal with thier manager and on up the line. There is a reason for this btw. It is actualy a crime to KNOWINGLY ACCEPT a counterfit coupon/note, which is why all the people commiting fraud with coupons is bad for everyone. It means cashiers have to be extra carful or risk getting fired if not worse actualy prosicuted. As far as I know, it hasn’t happend to many cashiers but there were some at Walmart that did actualy go to jail for accepting coupons either on items they were not for and/or counterfit(fake) coupons.
I have a coupon for $1.00/1 off of any 1 tide.. ANY, and have had many cashiers tell me no, it needs to be on a bottle when i tried to use it on a trial size. but its a coupon from the MANUFACTURER?! Halogrammed and all. I understand the counterfiet as I work at ShopRite as a supervisor, but even she said no. So I figured I’ll just wait til next time. But I’m tired of next time and decided to e-mail corporate even after a few cashiers told me they don’t accept coupons. Luckily, I always have my coupon policy. And nowhere in the policy does it say that coupons need to have a specific size unless it’s for a free item.. Copied right from the policy:
*Item purchased must be identical to the coupon (size, quantity, brand, flavor, color, etc). ((So any means a trial size right?))
.. all these troubles just for the money maker deals.. :/
I haven’t seen a Tide Coupon that didn’t exclude the trial in many months. maybe check the fine print. The other issue is that as stupid as it sounds, the trial size Tide are actually produced by a different company.
I must say I have always hated shopping at WM because of the service. So when I started using coupons I assumed it was going to be even worst than usual, however luckily all my coupon and price matching experiences have been perfectly fine. Sure the cashiers sometimes take longer than usual when doing some Qs, but whenever shopping at WM i never expect a quick checkout. I can say being a cashier I know how it is to deal with people who think they are always right. We have to understand that these cashiers always have someone to answer go when they screw up, and im sure they see people all day long trying to abuse or take advantage of the system. I never looked at it as it people were trying to takr $$$ out of my pocket. However i did feel sometimes.people thought you were too stupid to figure out their scam and that can make any one upset and defensive.
You know I thought the Walgreens manager today was gonna jump over the counter at me for trying to use the B1G1 Free coupon on the Clean and Clear! LOL! She was throwing stuff and yelling! I was just standing there in awww… I just said “Hi how are you today…” and handed her my coupons and all hell broke loose. I think maybe she didn’t want to be at work today! LOL!
lol!!!!!!!!!!! it’s funny how they think they own the store!
A mother, her preschooler and another child being put in a police car over a coupon dispute? What the heck was this manager thinking? I don’t care if she was throwing a screaming hissy fit, getting the cops involved was absolutely unnecessary. I would not be surprised if this mother doesn’t take legal action. I am not one who agrees with seeking a lawyer to sue for any ol’ thing, but in this case, I believe she is owed a SERIOUS apology and some sort of compensation for she and her children having to endure such trauma. Unbelievable!
Thank god my Walmart store is not like this.
I read the blog and in the comments saw that someone mentioned that at their Walmart, if they price match an item they won’t accept a coupon for it. You can only price match OR use a coupon not both.
I have done this several other times before. I see no where in their policy where they say you can’t use coupon and price match. Seems very stupid to me. I plan on checking with the CSM today at my local Walmart.
Anyone else run into this issue?
I understand from the employees side that coupon fraud is big at walmart. Saying that, U just have to look at coupon. If the item isn’t for the exact item on coupon, its a no go. Coupon Policy matter was totally wrong treatment. I am so sorry u were treated like that. Us humans are pretty stupid sometimes. Thank GOD the head manager showed up and got u out of going to jail. Adams professionalism should also be rewarded too. Christa for that matter is another story. I am not one for firing, but I really do think this is what needs to be done with Christa. To take as far as to call the police and have u arrested. I know after the fact its easy to say what i would of done to help. 1st if there is anyway u can get the names and numbers of those customers that were there to back up the coupon policy.. 2nd put the walmart 800 in your cellphone. or at least have corporate #’s in your coupon binder. I would of (lol) called them the moment she started with the coupon policy. If they heard at the time that the police were being called and they had your story on corporates end. LMAO i dont think that cashier is gonna have a job due to the fact, that we are fed up with fair couponers being treated like coupon frauders lol. just my 2 cents
@Amy, re: price matching and using coupon at WM….You are right 🙂 I called WM cust service, and was advised that the store’s should be BOTH PRICE MATCHING AND ACCEPTING A COUPON FOR THE PRICE MATCHED ITEM( IF THE CUSTOMER HAS ONE.)
I had an awful experience at my Walmart a few weeks ago too. I posted about it here:
http://savvystudentshopper.com/2011/04/walmart-what-ever-happened-to-the-customer-is-always-right/
I had a meeting with the Store Manager yesterday and he pretty much said it was still all my fault and that I was lying about my story. Sometimes I cannot stand Walmart! They always seem to get around everything.
